Have you ever searched for yourself on Google? If so, what did you find? Maybe it was your Facebook profile, or perhaps it was an old blog you created years ago. In the near future you may be presented with a virtual business card.

Currently being rolled out in India are Google’s ‘people cards’, which highlight individuals in a way that has never been seen before. Unless you’re famous or make a real effort in creating an online presence, it isn’t always easy finding a specific individual.

Google hopes to remedy this problem with “A virtual visiting card, where you can highlight your existing website or social profiles you want to visit, plus other information about yourself you want others to know.”

These virtual cards will feature website links, social profiles and any other information you want people to see when they are searching for you. This has the potential to be a useful tool for business professionals, entrepreneurs, job hunters, freelancers, and those with ecommerce website designs.

Whenever you search for someone’s name, and they have a people card, you will see a module which you can tap on to view the card. If there are multiple cards for one name, you will be able to easily distinguish between cards to find the person you are looking for.

If you’re in India and fancy creating a card, sign into your Google account then click on ‘add me to search’. Here you will be able to add all the information including a description, link to your website design, social media links and contact information.

You can choose what you want to add but the more information there is, the easier it will be to find you and your ecommerce website design. Also, it is important that Google returns the right and relevant information so they will have a number of measures in place to ensure that you are who you say you are.

One of these mechanisms is that you will be prevented from making more than one people card. If people do believe that a people card isn’t legitimate, you will be able to click on a feedback link to inform Google that one is suspicious.

Not in India? If you’re not currently situated in India and curious about this new feature, you can still make a people card through the use of a VPN. If you do set one up, bear in mind that you won’t show up on any searches apart from India.

What is the point of this new feature? It looks like another attempt by Google to increase its functionality so that users stay on Google and avoid visiting competitors. This particular feature looks like it’s aimed at LinkedIn. So far, Google hasn’t said if this feature will be introduced in other countries, but it will be interesting looking at how it develops.
