Find out how to create your Instagram business page here in five simple steps

Why Instagram?

Instagram is one of the most widely used platforms on social media. 500 million people log onto the platform daily, and there are over 1 billion active accounts.

Despite being owned by Meta, the same company which runs Facebook, it has had very few of the image problems associated with Facebook in recent years, and is especially popular among young audiences. It is vital to establish yourself on this platform if you wish to be taken seriously among the younger marketplace.

1. Showcase your products

As an image-based platform, Instagram is great for showcasing products. If these items have aesthetic appeal, this is the platform for you. Businesses showcasing food items, clothing, furniture, and holidays have always done well here. Oreo cookies, Audi, Victoria’s Secret, and Nike all have huge followings on Instagram, due to their innovative marketing and eye-catching imagery.

2. How do I start?

Setting up an Instagram business account couldn’t be easier. You can either convert your personal Instagram to a business profile or create a business profile from scratch. Follow these steps and you can go from there.

  • If you already have an Instagram account, click on your profile icon in the top right. (If you don't you can create on quickly at www.instagram.com)
  • Tap the settings icon
  • Find the option to ‘Switch to Professional Account’

3. Business or Creator?

From there it will give you the option to be a business or a creator. Usually you should select ‘business’, which is best for retailers and services. People creating a profile from scratch will join at this point. Click ‘Next’ when you are happy with your choice.

4. Choose Your Business Category

Select a category for your business. There are myriad options to choose from here – everything from food delivery to footwear. Click ‘Done’ once you are satisfied with your choice.

5. Contact Details

Fill in the contact details you would like displayed on your page, then click ‘Done’ again.

You can edit your business details and switch back to a personal account any time you wish. Through the Accounts Centre, you can also connect your account with your Facebook business profile if you have one, enabling you to post in both places at once. This makes managing your social media activity easier overall.

What next?

The best place to begin is to ask your friends and business associates to follow you, and follow them in return. Give your users and customers as many chances as possible to follow you, and give them something worth clicking on. A beautiful image of your latest product, or a striking ‘before and after’ of a cleaning project or building work, will wow your potential customers, and make your business memorable and eye catching. Always keep a good quality camera-phone on you, so you can take pictures of your best work frequently.

Creating a brand presence online

Don’t forget to build other social media accounts too. Having a LinkedIn profile is great for a professional appeal, and Facebook is still a superb place for marketing and showcasing your work. Pinterest, YouTube, and even TikTok have proven to be incredibly effective tools for achieving a breakthrough in the business world.
